Six LC III Chairpersons Declared Unopposed in Zombo District

Six incumbent LC III chairpersons in Zombo District have been returned unopposed as town council and sub-county elections continue across the country, while several other local government seats remain hotly contested.

Six LC III chairpersons in Zombo District have been declared unopposed as town council and sub-county elections proceed across the country.

In Alangi Sub-county, incumbent chairperson Meova Jackson was returned unopposed for the third consecutive term. All councillors from the sub-county’s five parishes were also elected unopposed.

Nyapea Sub-county similarly saw Constantine Omwon retain his seat unopposed for a second term.

In Athuma and Warr sub-counties, Jinaro Onegiu and James Cekecan Apoi were both returned unopposed, each securing a second term in office.

Atyak Sub-county chairperson Alfred Okura was also re-elected unopposed, while Melki Orwothuwun retained his position as chairperson of Padea Town Council without contest.

Elsewhere in the district, several local government positions are being keenly contested.

In Paidha Town Council, the race features Amos Jacan, the Zombo District youth chairperson running on the National Resistance Movement ticket, alongside independent candidate Denis Angala, Sam Rwothomio of the National Unity Platform, and Okirwoth Xyhm.

In Zombo Town Council, voters are choosing between independent candidate Eng. Frank Opio and Grace Onegi of the NRM.

Meanwhile, Abanga Sub-county has attracted a three-way contest involving independent candidates Cosmas Wanok and the incumbent Richard Awekonimungu, alongside Tetizo Unytuthi of the NRM.

Zombo District has 15 lower local government units, with more than 140,000 registered voters spread across the district.

Some voters expressed optimism as they cast their ballots. Domica Akumu, a 34-year-old resident of Bedkuwengi Cell in Paidha Town Council, said she hopes the elections will bring meaningful change, particularly for young people.

“I hope that there will be changes in our lives after these elections,” Akumu said, urging elected leaders to lobby for productive ventures that can create employment for the youth.

Another voter, Briget Piraciel, who voted at Uturgang Girls polling station, said she hopes the next local government leaders will prioritise extending electricity to rural areas of Zombo District.
